WebFeb 24, 2008 · From my research it also appears that the 396 and 427 blocks (passenger car blocks not high deck truck blocks) of that era come off the same castings and the only difference was the factory boring. Ditto for 4 bolt blocks. Core shift was not too much of a problem in Mk. IV Chev. blocks up to the early 70's. Later it maybe an issue. WebJan 9, 2007 · When asking yesterday about whether I could bore my 396 to a 427, a couple of you said to use the "old wooden pencil" trick. I didn't know if that meant a #2 pencil, carpenters pencil or what. I have a 1966 396 casting #3855961 2 bolt block. When I look that number up, that is supposed to be the same casting used in '66 for a 427 2 bolt.

So if you have a 454 with a 427 (3.76) crank, you have a 427. If you have a 454 with a 454 (4.00)crank you have a 454. 3.76 crank (stroke) are in 396s 402s, and 427 etc.. 4.00 crank is in 454 502 etc..

These engines have a good stroke rod length ratio. I think very similar to a 327, which was ideal. 350 SBC used the same length rods as a 327. To fix a 350 ya' need to put 6" rods in it to make it more like a 327. Not only can those blocks safely be bored to build a 427, they can be bored over size after that. If the engine block is cast as a 427 there will be room to overbore it, w/o risk of running out of wall thickness.
